WeatherTech: An American Success Story

Thirty years ago in 1989, out of his home in Clarendon Hills, Illinois, founder and CEO David MacNeil had a vision. Out of that, WeatherTech was born. MacNeil was dissatisfied with the quality of existing automotive floor mats in the United States, so WeatherTech began importing floor mats directly from England. However, MacNeil was convinced that he could create a better product right here in America, using American materials, American machines and American workers. In 2007 he made the decision to move production of his entire line of automotive accessories to America, opening facilities within the suburbs of Chicago.

MacNeil once said, "When I walk into my local hardware store, I typically find 85% of the goods for sale are manufactured 7,000 miles away. At WeatherTech, we are doing our part for the American economy and for our 300 million fellow citizens and neighbors. My philosophy is that if my neighbor doesn’t have a job, sooner or later I won’t have a job either."

Since then, WeatherTech has expanded operations significantly. Opening new facilities (11 total, with the 12th currently in development), developing new and innovative products and creating jobs for Americans. WeatherTech and MacNeil are dedicated to investing in American manufacturing and the American economy. "We build, buy and hire American… Isn’t this the way it’s supposed to be?" stated MacNeil.

At WeatherTech, 95% of the products are made in their own factories within the United States, and that’s a number that WeatherTech is dedicated to increasing every year. Many of WeatherTech's products are also designed and engineered in America too! A Product Development center, located in Downers Grove, Illinois, is where all the great ideas come to life. Once WeatherTech’s engineers have completed designing a new part, it is ready to be produced at the factories in Bolingbrook, Illinois.
